Based on preliminary 2012 data, the number of residential net metering customers has grown to approximately 297,000 nationwide. Although the number of residential net metering customers is a very small percentage of total residential customers (127 million or less than 1%), the 2012 figure represents almost a 60-fold increase relative to the 5,000 or so net metered customers reported in 2003.
